Occupational wellness, one of the eight aspects of wellness, is about enjoying your occupational endeavors and feeling like you are making a difference and contributing.

Sometimes, however, occupational endeavors seem to be more about making a living and putting food on the table. There are times when enjoying our jobs and doing it just to have an income seem to collide.

If you don’t enjoy your current job, there are things you can do to help. You can try to find something that better suits you. To do that you have to know what suits you. You do have to take some time to get to know yourself and what you do and do not prefer. HINT: It takes time. Do what you can now, do the best you can where you are, be consistent and don’t give up. Your time will come.

Check Your Attitude

Sometimes simply changing our attitude about our own circumstances and position in our current jobs makes a big difference. Here are some tips to help you come up with ideas to make your current job more enjoyable:

  1. Get motivated to face the day to day. Do some positive self-talk. It’s okay.

  2. Keep your work in perspective. Do the best you can in your current situation, keeping the bigger picture in mind.

  3. Remember you are more than your work. You are not your job and your job is not you. It’s what you do.

Make a Change

If you are looking for a different occupational opportunity, take your time, do your research and stay employed while you do that. Side hustles (aka moonlighting) are as popular now as ever.

When you look for something to earn extra money, keep in mind that it will take time, energy and organization to pull this off. You can do it, but have a plan. Do research to fully understand what is involved. Think about:

  1. How much time will be involved?

  2. What is the learning curve?

  3. What kind of training does it provide?

  4. Is it a solid company?

  5. Will you work from home?

Mainly, be persistent and consistent in your efforts. Don’t let things easily discourage you. There are aspects about every job, every side hustle – every day life, that are not necessarily fun. Get through it with a smile.

I finally found one that’s worked for me for awhile. I love it.

All of us experience anxiety to some degree and from time to time. If you are in the business of marketing, you are marketing yourself and your company’s products or services. If your anxiety occurs often and is significant enough, it can become an overwhelming obstacle. The longer it continues at that level the worse it can and will get.

Anxiety will not go away by itself. Like everything in life and your career, you must take positive personal steps to overcome it. Your personal and professional life will suffer immensely if you don’t do something to address it. The below article contains some exercises that can and will help you. You need to retrain your brain.

 Anxiety

There are some interesting perspectives here that can really help. They fall into several categories that begin with: Don’t even talk to anyone, and then talk to people while eliminating any chance of rejection. Be curious and ask genuine questions. The answers will follow, easily. Quiet your mental chatter in that moment. Your self-talk is more powerful than you think. Have fun play games and even bet your friends. Avoid over thinking. Fear is a gift of life. It means you’re still alive; you’re still breathing (even if it is heavy).

Like many lines of work, rejection exists within my business and therefore I am exposed to anxiety-related situations regularly. There is no question that approaching someone that I find attractive as a potential customer can trigger those feelings of anxiety. I HAVE TO overcome them. It is my livelihood. Remember, yes is a good answer, but no can be good because it is one step closer to the next yes. Do some positive things today that will help you overcome and enjoy a better life and career. Don’t let anxiety win. It is the most important battle you will fight.

Attitude leads to the right behavior. Make your faith bigger than your fears. This applies to our business and personal lives.

Tomorrow is too late, yesterday is over, start where you stand.

I have started over so many times, I know exactly where the starting line is. Just stay in the race. Always know where the starting line is. We’re all going to start over and over. It doesn’t matter how much experience or age we have. There’s always a new adventure and something new to learn. mlr

It’s more important to walk the walk than talk the talk. mlr

Emotional wellness relates to understanding your feelings and coping effectively with stress. It’s important to pay attention to self-care, stress-reduction and the development of inner resources so you can learn and grow from experiences. This is important when you start a new adventure, also, such as a business working from the luxury of your own home. You still have to learn these things.
